New BBB Letter-Grade A+ Through F Ratings System Helps Businesses Improve Operations

Starting June 1st the Better Business Bureau (BBB) of Greater Houston and South Texas, one of the first organizations to rate businesses on their honesty and fairness to customers, is improving its rating system. The new business ratings are now based on letter grades A+ through F. These provide more specific information for businesses to find trustworthy suppliers and vendors, and at the same time provide a more precise guide to improving operations. The new letter grades replace the previous “satisfactory” or “unsatisfactory” ratings.
Founded in Houston in 1922, the regional BBB provides reports on more than 100,000 businesses in Greater Houston and the South Texas region. Of those, 9,000 are Accredited Businesses belonging to and supporting the BBB. The new letter grades are displayed on individual company profiles called “BBB Reliability Reports.” All are accessible online and free of charge at www.bbbhouston.org and
The proprietary BBB ratings formula takes into account 16 weighted ffactors, using objective information and actual incidences of a business’s behavior that are verified and evaluated by BBB professionals. Specific issues affecting a business’s rating are described in detail in BBB Reliability Reports. Ratings factors include:
The business’s overall complaint history with BBB, including the number and severity of complaints to BBB from customers.
Whether complaints have been resolved in a timely manner or the business has demonstrated a good faith effort to resolve them.
How long the business has been operating and whether it meets appropriate competency licensing.
Government actions against the business related to marketplace activities
Advertising issues evaluated by BBB.
Whether the business is a BBB Accredited Business and has committed to BBB standards.
Rating factors also take into account the opinion of the BBB as to whether business models and industries operate in violation of the law, misrepresent products and services, and are likely to generate trade practice concerns and/or have high levels of customer dissatisfaction.
The new letter-grade concept was tested for more than two years at selected BBBs. With modifications, based on testing, the new ratings system was adopted by the parent organization Council of Better Business Bureaus as the standard for all BBBs.
As part of its strategy to build trust in the marketplace, the BBB also recently changed the way businesses affiliated with the organization were designated, from “BBB Member” to “BBB Accredited Business.” The “Accredited” designation highlights the fact that businesses have been evaluated by BBB and have contractually agreed to meet and uphold BBB’s high standards for integrity and reliability when dealing with customers.
Both BBB Accredited Businesses and non-accredited businesses in BBB’s database will receive a letter grade as part of their report.

It is critically important that all businesses in Greater Houston and South Texas provide the latest information to either of these websites. This information will remain confidential and is the basis of providing an accurate grade under our new ratings system.

Friends, be informed and get the word out, our fireworks liberties are under constant attack by the people that have an ultimate goal of the all out ban of fireworks for sale in the great state of Texas. While we carry on our every day activities of work, family, church, and play, there is always some self appointed anti fireworks activist or group of the same looking for an angle of attack on our fireworks privileges. The activist that are against fireworks find ways to tighten down on regulation, expand on and modify already existing laws and codes, and before you know it through incremental advancements we who are in the business of selling fireworks, and those of you who love to shoot fireworks in this great state, have lost the freedom to have fireworks for sale, or buy fireworks. The only fireworks in Texas would be public, and permited fireworks displays.

We need to cover up the members of the Senate, with special emphasis on Houston delegation, with this attachment.Senator Nichols is willing to put HB 1727 on the Senate intent if we can show him 21 votes. The city of Houston is trying to kill the bill by telling members that our bill will keep them from regulating large 18 wheelers carry fireworks. The attachment let’s them know that the Department of Transportation regulates these trucks completely and no state law can override Federal law….fax and call please….

SECTION 1. Chapter 342, Local Government Code, is amended by adding Sub chapter Z to read as follows:
SUB CHAPTER Z. MISCELLANEOUS PROVISIONS
Sec. 342.901. TRANSPORT OF FIREWORKS. The transport of fireworks in unopened and original packaging may not be prohibited or regulated.

Under Federal law 1.4G fireworks (consumer fireworks) may not be transported in quantities of more that 1,000 pounds unless:

1. Possess a commercial drivers license with a Haz Mat endorsement from the DPS
2. A bill of lading from the shipper stating weight, products, and classification;
3. Place placards prescribed by Department Of Transportation for the type of material that you are hauling on all four sides
4. Must use Haz Mat routes designated by DPS
5. Must be in a commercial vehicle licensed by the State of Texas as a commercial carrier and must possess a designated number assigned by the Department of Transportation.

Federal law does not regulate transportation of fireworks weighing less than 1,000 pounds.

• 1,000 pounds of fireworks would not fit in a non-commercial vehicle.
• Federal definition of 1.4G consumer fireworks as derived from testing:

Division 1.4 Explosives: Division 1.4 consists of explosives that present a minor explosion hazard. The explosive effects are largely confined to the package and no projection of fragments of appreciable size or range is to be expected. An external fire must not cause virtually instantaneous explosion of almost the entire contents of the package.

If you are unaware HB2788 will cripple the fireworks industry. It basically gives the 254 counties in Texas the option to choose whether fireworks will be sold during the regular seasons. I need your help by taking the information in the attachment, creating a quick email or letter to your local representative and sending it to them. Please Kill House Bill 2788, it will serve as nothing more than a stepping stone towards an all out ban on the retail sale of fireworks in our great state of Texas. There are many Native Texans my self included that a bill such as this will adversely effect. I am confident that there are far more important issues at stake right now in Texas given what is taking place in our Country. Our industry is consistently under attack buy those that want the sale of fireworks ban in Texas, and this House Bill 2788 is just one more step in that direction. The fireworks industry in Texas just went through a Rocket Revision as a compromise to a greater threat. Sir I am asking for your support to please kill House Bill 2788
